Our recent choirmasters and their careers

František Ostrý (*1987) 

He began playing piano and singing at the Elementary Art School in Boskovice. After high school he finished Music Education and Czech Language and Literature for Secondary Schools at the Masaryk University in Brno, where he currently continues with the Doctoral Study Program of Music Theory and Pedagogy under the leadership of prof. Michal Košuta. He has been long involved in the work of Jakub Jan Ryba with the aim of revealing it to professionals and society. He is the choirmaster of the church choir in Kunštát, the male choir Novocantus in Nové Město na Moravě and the mixed choir Janáček in Boskovice and works externally with the mixed choir Nota of the Grammar School Boskovice. He has been conducting Lumír since September 2016.

Josef JAVORA (*1993, Brno) 

In his early childhood Josef Javora began playing the piano, went to music school in Brno-Líšeň and later to Vítězslava Kaprálová´s music school where he graduated in professor Marcela Slaná´s class. Since the age of 14 he has been the organist in St. Jiljí parish church in Brno-Líšeň where he also partakes in leading the church choir.
In 2009 he started studying at the music conservatory in Pavel Zemek Novák´s composition clas. He also attended conducting classes with professor Stanislav Kummer. After passing the school-leaving exam in composition he was accepted to Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, where he has been studying orchestral conducting in professor Emil Skoták´s class. Now he studies at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in England. 
He has been conducting the Lumír choir since January 2014 till June 2016.

Jiří NAJVAR (*1990, Čeladná) 

is a student of the Faculty of Music of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. He attends choral conducting under the tutelage of Prof. Lubomír Mátl and composition with Ing. MgA. Dan Dlouhý, Ph.D.
In 2011 he graduated from Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava in the class of Milan Báchorek by the composition Rhapsody for trombone, organ and chamber orchestra (Rapsodie pro pozoun, varhany a komorní orchestr) performed by Moravian philharmonic orchestra in Olomouc (Moravská filharmonie Olomouc). During his study of the conservatory he worked as a teacher at the 1. private Primary school of arts MIS Music in Kopřivnice teaching piano, solo singing and group interpretation. At the same time he became a regular participant of a nationwide composer competition Generation (Generace) where he won numerous awards for the compositions Quadrilles for quartet of soprano flutes (Čtverylky pro kvartet sopránových fléten), Journey to the Zoo (Cesta do Zoo) and Images of Štramberk (Štramberské obrázky).
In 2007 he participated in an international composer course in Trstěnice. His compositions were heard on festivals Musical present (Hudební Současnost), Janáček’s May (Janáčkův Máj) and at the concerts organized by musical-theoretical section of Janáček Conservatory and Grammar school in Ostrava.
In the period from 2009 to 2012 he worked as a choirmaster of the choral society ECHO with which he participated in recording a CD Looking back (Ohlédnutí) of brass orchestra FHS and a trip of the choir to Slovenian Dravograd.
As an assistant to the choirmaster Milan Chromík he is participating in musical production of Ostrava children’s choir (Ostravský dětský sbor) concerts. He is a hosting conductor of the Chamber orchestra in Kopřivnice (Komorní orchestr v Kopřivnici) with which he also introduced his composition A short suite for flute and strings (Krátká suita pro flétnu a smyčce) at the festival of amateur choirs Encounter 2011 (Setkání 2011) in Olomouc.
He conducted the Lumír choir in Brno from September 2012 till January 2014.

Lukáš KOZUBÍK (*1980, Ostrava) 

studied operatic and concert singing at Janáček conservatoire and Institute for Artistic Studies at University of Ostrava in Doc. Drahomíra Míčková´s class.

From 1996 to 2006 he was a member of the opera chorus at the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava while teaching singing and piano at several music schools at the same time. Since 2000 he´s been performing as a regular guest of Prague Chambre Choir at operatic festivals Pesaro Rosini (Italy), Bad Wilbald Rosini (Germany), Mozart Opera Festival A Coruňa (Spain).

Today Lukáš Kozubík studies choral conducting at JAMU, Brno, at the Department of Conducting, in Prof. Lubomír Mátl´s class. He also teaches at an elementary school for visually disabled children in Brno.

Natalia CHIRILENCO (*1975, Mereni, Moldavská republika) 

studied in years 1983 – 1994 Boarding-music lyceum of C. Porumbesku in Kishinev, Moldavia. These studies was completed by general high school diploma with approbation as teacher of theoretical music subjects. She continued her studies at Music Academy „G. Musicescu“ at the department of „Academic choral conducting“. She completed her studies at the Faculty of Vocal Arts and Musical Pedagogy of the National University of Arts, where she obtained the degree Academic Choirs Conductor, Choirmaster and Professor of Music with specialization Academic Choirs Conductor.
In 1999 she moved to the Czech Republic. Since January 2001 she led and conducted Mixed choir Schola Cantorum in Prostějov. Every year she performed two big concerts, where she presented cycles or masses with the accompaniment of local Basic School orchestra and many other concerts all over Czech Republic, but also in Poland and Austria.
From September 2003, she conducts the preliminary department of child chorus Primavera attached to Basic school of Arts Jaroslava Kvapila in Brno. Child chorus Rosička was on April 2004 under her leadership awarded Gold medal in the regional round of child choirs contest. On the basis of this success, Rosička was levied for the national round of child choruses contest that took place on November 2004 in Nový Jičín, where the choir placed silver. Repertoir of choir covers arrangments of popular songs, foreign language songs and polyphony, appropriate for children aged 8-11.
Since May 2004 she has been conductor of mixed chorus Lumír based in Brno. Under her leadership the chorus gives regularly performances and was twice placed silver at the International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music with Petr Eben prize.

Kamila FOJTOVÁ (*1976, Česká Lípa) 

during her basic school studies she attended Basic School of Arts, subject Violin playing and later also Piano playing. In the years 1990-1996 she studied at Conservatorie in Teplice subject Violin playing by Prof. Švehla, M. Hronek and by Mgr. N. Slavíčková. In the years 1994-1998 she studied at the same place Conducting by Mgr. J. Valta. In the years 1993,1995,1997 and 1999 she participeted on the organization of international mixed chorus festival CRYSTAL CHOR in Nový Bor. From 1994 to 1998 she cooperated with child chorus CAMELLA on the position of second conductor. In 1998 she started her studies at Janáček Academy of Music Arts subject, Choral - conducting by Doc. L. Mátl. She graduated in 2003 and from 2001 she studies at the same academy subject Orchestral conducting by Doc. E. Skoták.
Since 2000 Kamila Fojtová acted firstly as second conductor and from 2001 as a first conductor of mixed choir LUMÍR (Brno). Since 1999 she conducts mixed choir VOKÁL (Přerov) also. Under her leadership, this body placed gold in 2002 on international competition Svátky písní in Olomouc. She gives regularly performances with both choirs in the Czech Republic as well as abroad.

Pavel ŠNAJDR (*1975, Brno) 

after graduation at gymnasium followed his studies at Janáček Academy of Music Arts in Brno. There he took his degree in Composition by Prof. Alois Piňos and than Conducting by Doc. Emil Skoták. He was twice awarded for his compositions in Composers competition Generace. He was also member of composers association „Bezmocná hrstka“. Back at his studies he performed on the scene of Chamber opera JAMU several pieces, among others Albert Herring from Benjamin Britten, Don Giovanni from Giuseppe Gazzaniga.
By the year 2001 he led the Chamber Orchestra of Blansko and as conductor cooperated also with Moravian Philharmony Olomouc. For several years he is following interpretation of contemporary music with ensemble Ars Incognita. With this ensemble Šnajdr already performed 40 premieres of contemporary author´s compositions. In 2001 Ars Incognita had its independent concert on the festival Prague Spring. Since 2001 has Pavel Šnajdr permanent engagement in the opera of J.K.Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. There he performed among other pieces Samson and Dalila from Saint.Saens, Eugen Onigin from Tchaikovskij or Swannery from P.I.Tchaikovskij.
This year Šnajdr performed lesser known opera Lantern from Vítězslav Novák, which was included in the program of celebrations of th Czech Year of Music. Pavel Šnajdr was choir-master of Lumír from 1994-2001.

Petr RAJNOHA (*1975, Znojmo) 

graduated in 1995 subject Organ at the Brno Conservatoire by Prof. Zdeněk Nováček. The same year he was enrolled to Janáček Academy of Music Arts, where he studied under leadership of Doc. Kamila Klugarová. In the years 1996-1997 he studied at Conservatoire National de Région de Rueil-Malmaison in Paris by famous Organ player Susan Landale. After returning home he followed his studies in Prague by Doc. Jaroslav Tůma.
In his present artistic work Petr Rajnoha realized a lot of succes in International competitions. Thanks to his approach to authentic interpretation of Organ music is Petr Rajnoha actually one of the best Czech concert organists and is invited to several european music festivals. In the Czech republic, he performs concerts in many towns and festivals (Prague Spring). He makes a records of historical instruments music for Český rozhlas and cooperate with many important Czech orchestra. Actually he lives in Prague, where he teach young organists and doctoral students at Academy of Music Arts.
Petr Rajnoha acted in Lumír during his studies at conservatoire, firstly as ordinary singer and later for one season as a conductor.

František LAVIČKA

Emil SKOTÁK (*1954, Brno) 

In 1975 Emil Skoták graduated at Brno Conservatoire, subject horn and for several years worked as orchestral player (Janáček Opera in Brno, National Philharmony of Brno). In 1981 he graduated at Janáček Academy of Music Arts (subject: Choral - conducting by Prof. Otakar Trhlík and Prof. František Jílek) and after passing his military service, he acted from 1982 to 1985 as a conductor of Severočeská National Philharmony in Teplice. In 1983 he was levied among 30 young conductors from all over the world for G. Fittelberg Competition in Katowice. As a conductor and choir-master Skoták acted also in Hudební divadlo in Brno (1985-1990) and in Brno Philharmonic Choir (1991-1992).
Since 1985 he gives lessons at JAMU in Brno, where he habilitated in 2002. For the students of conducting, he organizes training orchestra and runs conductors courses.
His repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music, he often performs premieres of contemporary pieces (cooperation among others with choir Ars Incognita) He likes connection of symphonic music with jazz, swing or musical. In the recent years he cooperates with Městské divadlo in Brno, where he participate on important music performances (Sny svatojánských nocí, Bastard, West Side Story, Babylon). These pieces are performed also in foreign countries (Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia) and some of them were recorded also by Czech TV.
Emil Skoták has been conductor of the choir Lumír from 1986-1989. The next two conductors grown up from his students.

Ing. Miroslav ŠMÍD

Boris KOBRLE (*1954 Brno, †2021 Praha) 

studied musical science and history at Masaryk University in Brno and in 1987 graduated in Janáček Academy of Music Arts subject Music Art-Choral Conducting. By the year 1986 he worked as a High School teacher in Brno. Since his studies he conducted subsequently several choirs. With the child chorus Kantiléna Kobrle as a second choir-master participated in competitions in Warsaw (1980), Arezzo (1981) and Prato (1982).

In 1986 he accepted the offer of the broadcast Český rozhlas in Hradec Králové, where he worked as editor of classical music by the year 1989. From the beginning of the 90´s is his activity connected with Prague. He participated as an author on project Mozart in Prague ( cycle of topografical concerts on places where Mozart performed in Prague), he directed records of J. Simon or J. Tůma. Since 1992 he worked in Český rozhlas Praha, firstly as redactor of Classical Music redaction and later as Chief-redactor of station Vltava. In 1999 he became director of the competition and festival Concertino Praga, what entailed for him connection of the role of Manager, Redactor and also Dramaturgist. He likes classical music with regard to authenticity of instruments, specifical blazonry and space.

Boris Kobrle has been choir-master in 1984.

František LAVIČKA

V letech 1969 – 1975 studoval hru na akordeon na brněnské konzervatoři ve třídě prof. Jana Tesaře. Úspěšně reprezentoval na tuzemských a zahraničních mezinárodních soutěžích (Hořovice, Klingenthal). Mezi léty 1975‑1980 studoval na brněnské JAMU dirigování orchestru (u národního umělce profesora Františka Jílka), řízení dětského sboru (v Kantiléně u Ivana Sedláčka) a hlasovou výchovu (soukromě u Jiřího Bara). Je autorem několika učebnic pro předměty Intonace, Sluchová analýza a Didaktika.
Od roku 1996 složil nebo aranžoval scénickou hudbu k řadě představení dramatického oddělení konzervatoře (Starci na chmelu; Faust, Markétka, služka a já apod.). Se svou manželkou Miroslavou napsal hudbu a texty k muzikálu Ze života hmyzu, provedeného roku 2004 na brněnské konzervatoři jako maturitní představení. Jako hudební režisér nahrál množství CD nejrůznějších žánrů. V letech 2005‑2006 vystudoval výchovné poradenství na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně. Úspěšně obhájil diplomovou práci s názvem Identifikace nadaných žáků a optimalizace jejich vyučování, kde mj. popsal typologii hudebně vzdělávaných žáků na ZUŠ i konzervatoři. V letech 2006‑2013 byl sbormistrem pěveckého sboru Cantamus při ZUŠ Letovice. Dirigentem pěveckého sboru Lumír byl František Lavička v období 1979‑1984 a znovu v letech 1989‑1994.

Další výrazná osobnost v dlouholeté historii pěveckého spolku Lumír není známá pouze tím, že jde o otce světově známého spisovatele Milana Kundery a strýce básníka a dramatika Ludvíka Kundery. Narodil se 17. srpna 1891 v Králově Poli, kde jeho otec provozoval na Palackého třídě hostinskou a řeznickou činnost. Od mládí byl nadaným klavíristou a hru na tento nástroj studoval v Brně, ale třeba i v Paříži – v pozdějších letech úspěšně vystupoval jako sólista a komorní hráč na klavír v řadě evropských měst: ve Vídni, Paříži, Kolíně nad Rýnem, Moskvě, Kyjevě apod. Byl nejen žákem Leoše Janáčka, ale zároveň interpretem jeho skladeb. Po začátku 1. světové války musel narukovat k 8. pěšímu pluku rakousko-uherské armády a v květnu 1915 byl zajat na východní frontě. V srpnu následujícího roku vstoupil v Kyjevě do československých legií. V nich založil a sám řídil legionářský orchestr. V roce 1918 byl jmenován náčelníkem Osvětového odboru čs. vojska v Rusku a v této funkci zůstal až do svého návratu do vlasti v létě 1920. Za první republiky působil ve funkci tajemníka brněnské konzervatoře, v roce 1922 se zde stal profesorem pro vyšší hru klavírní. Již o rok dřív se po svém příteli Václavu Kaprálovi ujal vedení pěveckého sboru Lumír a zůstal v něm až do roku 1928. Mimo to přednášel, sepsal celou řadu hudebně historických spisů, knih a statí o soudobé hudbě, byl jednatelem Klubu moravských skladatelů, prvním předsedou brněnské pobočky Svazu československých skladatelů, ředitelem státní zkušební komise pro učitele hudby na středních školách a učitelských ústavech a inspektorem soukromých hudebních škol v zemi Moravskoslezské. Za okupace byl předčasně penzionován a věnoval se tvorbě knih o hudbě. Po osvobození se stal správcem brněnské konzervatoře a vedoucím Ústavu pro hudební výchovu na pedagogické fakultě University Karlovy. Vedle toho působil jako profesor klavírní hry a zástupce děkana pražské Akademie múzických umění pro Brno. Po založení JAMU zastával dva roky funkci děkana hudební fakulty a 1. října 1948 se stal prvním rektorem celé akademie. Zůstal jim po dobu 13 let do listopadu 1961. Český muzikolog, klavírista, hudební pedagog a publicista PhDr. Ludvík Kundera zemřel 12. května 1971 v Brně.

Václav KAPRÁL

Z celé řady sbormistrů, kteří za 150 let prošli pěveckým sborem Lumír, je patrně nejznámější osobností. Narodil se 26. března 1889 v Určicích na Prostějovsku a měl celkem 11 sourozenců. Když zkrachoval malý rodičovský krámek se smíšeným zbožím, přestěhovala se celá rodina na brněnské předměstí do Králova Pole. Malý Václav se už od 11 let učil hrát na klavír. Když jeho učitelka Marie Kuhlová ukázala Kaprálovu skladbičku Lístek do památníku Leoši Janáčkovi, věhlasný skladatel doporučil, aby se talentovaný mladík věnoval hudbě úplně. Tak začala v roce 1908 studia na Janáčkově Varhanické škole v Brně. Dokončil je o dva roky později (1910), ale ještě během studií měl svůj první klavírní koncert. V roce 1911 založil v Králově Poli na Metodějově ulici č. 6 soukromou hudební školu, kterou řídil až do roku 1934. Jeho žena Vítězslava Uhlířová zde vyučovala zpěvu, on sám hře na klavír. Dvakrát v letech 1912-1915 a 1919-1921 stál v čele pěveckého spolku Lumír. V roce 1915 se mu narodila dcera Vítězslava (Vitka), která se měla za svůj krátký život (zemřela na tuberkulózu v pouhých 25 letech ve Francii v červnu 1940) proslavit jako uznávaná skladatelka a dirigentka. Po 1. světové válce ještě vystudoval kompozici v mistrovské třídě Vítězslava Nováka (1919-1920) a postupně se stává výraznou postavou a organizátorem hudebního života v Brně v období 1. republiky. Spolu s přáteli hudebníky Ludvíkem Kunderou a Vilémem Petrželkou byl u zrodu Klubu mladých moravských skladatelů, pořádal hudební přednášky a dva roky působil jako hudební referent deníku Rovnost. V polovině 20. let se během klavírních kurzů v Paříži seznámil se skladatelem Bohuslavem Martinů a navázali celoživotní přátelství. V roce 1927 ho povolal významný český muzikolog a pedagog Vladimír Helfert (spolu také založili časopis Hudební rozhledy) na místo prvního lektora hudby na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity. V roce 1936 byl jmenován řádným profesorem Státní konzervatoře. Po příchodu německých okupantů se v roce 1941 stal státním inspektorem soukromých hudebních škol a ředitelem státní komise pro učitelství hudby, ale v září 1942 jej v rámci akce E (Emigration) zatklo gestapo z důvodu činnosti jeho bratra Bohumila v čs. zahraničním odboji. Zbytek války prožil v internačním táboře ve Svatobořicích, odkud se vrátil s podlomeným zdravím. Po osvobození se vrátil na konzervatoř, aktivně se zapojil do příprav k založení Janáčkovy akademie múzických umění (JAMU) a v roce 1946 byl zvolen prvním předsedou Syndikátu českých skladatelů. Po těžké nemoci předčasně umírá 6. dubna 1947 v Brně ve věku 58 let.
Z jeho díla je možno připomenout klavírní skladby Ukolébavky jara (1916-1917), Suita romantica (1918), Tři písně (1918), Miniatury (1922), Sonatina bucolica (1936) nebo Klavírní sonáta č. 4 (1939), která se stala symbolickým protestem proti nacistické okupaci. Z komorní, písňové a orchestrální tvorby stojí za zmínku Píseň podzimu pro smyčcové kvarteto a zpěv (1929), písňové cykly Pro ni (1927) a Uspávanky pro střední hlas a malý orchestr (1932), dvojzpěvy Milodějné kvítí (1942), v nichž je patrný vliv Antonína Dvořáka. Během věznění v internačním táboře ve Svatobořicích složil Českou mši (1943) a Klavírní sonatinu (1944).
